MOORHEAD, Minn. — After scoring just three goals in their last four games, Saint Mary's University women's hockey coach
Terry Mannor must have been thrilled to see his Cardinals erupt for three goals in their Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game against Concordia, Saturday.
And he wasn't.
What he wasn't thrilled about however, was the Cobbers' offense, which doubled-up the Cardinals, scoring three second-period goals en route to a 6-3 victory.
“It was good to see us get our offense going,” said Mannor, who got a goal and two assists from senior
Melissa Mondo (Vadnais Heights, Minn.), but surrendered three second-period power-play goals in dropping their seventh straight. “We just didn't play as well defensively as we needed to – especially in the second period.
“Give up those three goals in the second period really took the wind out of our sails but then, there wasn't a lot of wind in them to begin with.
The two teams traded first-period goals, with Mondo netting her team-leading ninth of the season for the Cardinals.
The second period, however, was all Concordia, as the Cobbers took control with their back-to-back-to-back power-play tallies.
SMU's
Rachel Harrison (Madison, Wis.) and
Rebecca Jelenc (Sheboygan, Wis.) were able to find the back of the net in the third period, but the Cobbers matched them goal for goal in snapping their five-game slide.
“It's always tough to come up here and play – but that's no excuse for the outcome,” said Mannor, whose team will get a chance to avenge Friday's loss when the two teams square off again Saturday. “We did not play well for 60 minutes, and that's the bottom line – when we do give a complete effort for all three periods, we struggle.
“And tonight, we struggled.”
