Box Score Game Summary
ST. PAUL, Minn. —
Nikki Jung (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) wasn't able to post her second straight shutout — the Pipers' put an end to that bid early in the second period — but the Saint Mary's University senior did help the Cardinals post their second straight win, netted single goals in the first and second periods en route to a 2-1 win over Hamline Friday evening.
"We played very well," understated SMU coach
Terry Mannor, whose team snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 4-0 win against Concordia last Saturday. "It was really like we picked up right where we left off (against the Cobbers). We put together three solid periods then, and we did the same thing tonight."
And the Cardinals needed to be at their best in the second period, having to kill of five penalties — including a pair of 5-on-3 man advantages — in the game's middle 20 minutes.
"We weren't able to get into much of a flow in the second period because of all the penalties," said Mannor. "But our (penalty) kill did a great job — and so did Nikki. She came up huge a couple of times in that second period and that was the difference."
SMU jumped out to a 1-0 lead on
Amy Madden's (East Grand Rapids, Mich.) goal late in the first period, before the Pipers tied it up six minutes into the second period. The Cardinals then took the lead of good on
Laura Mueller's (St. Paul, Minn.) fifth goal of the season — then hopped on Jung's shoulders and let the senior carry them to the win.
"It's nice to see us put two solid games together back-to-back," said Mannor, whose team will travel to Hamline for Saturday's second game of the two-game Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference series. "Hopefully we can just keep it going."
