Box Score Game Summary
WINONA, Minn. — In the third period of Friday's nonconference game against Lake Forest, the Saint Mary's University women's hockey team was good.
Very good.
The Cardinals held the high-powered Foresters to just one shot in the game's final 20 minutes, while peppering Lake Forest goalie Sally Bevis with 15 shots of their own.
Unfortunately, as memorable as the Cardinals' play was in the third period, it was equally as forgettable in the first two, SMU managed just nine shots on goal in the first two periods combined — and gave up a pair of goals in each period — as Lake Forest handed the Cardinals a 4-1 setback at the SMU Ice Arena.
"For the first time all season, I actually yelled (in the locker room) after the second period," admitted SMU coach
Terry Mannor. "We just put in a new system a couple of days ago, and we were a bit rusty — having only skated five times this week, after a month off — but we weren't playing with any heart.
"And if we don't play with heart, we are in trouble."
Obviously, Mannor's between-periods "chat" seemed to do the trick.
"We played so much more like we are capable (in the third period," said Mannor. "The problem is, the game of hockey is three periods long — we have to play like we did in the third period for the entire game."
The Foresters jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the game's opening 12 minutes, before
Melissa Mondo (Vadnais Heights, Minn.) got the Cardinals on the board with her team-leading seventh goal of the season at the 12:50 mark of the first period.
That, however, was the last shot the Cardinals would get past Bevis, while Lake Forest added two more goals in the second period to ice the win.
"Hopefully the team learned a valuable lesson tonight," said Mannor, whose team hosts the Foresters in Game 2 of the two-game nonconference series Saturday. "If we put forth the effort and play with heart, we can play with anybody."
