NORTHFIELD, Minn. — Stuck in the midst of an eight-game winless streak, the Saint Mary's University men's soccer team was in dire need of a victory.

Unfortunately, Carleton — ranked No. 20 in the latest national poll — , wasn't about to be the sacrificial lamb.

Just the opposite.

The Knights played the role of the ungracious host Wednesday afternoon, as Carleton erupted for seven goals — including four in the game's final 45 minutes — en route to a 7-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory over the outmatched Cardinals.

"There's not a whole lot to say about this one," said SMU coach Chris Dembiec, whose Cardinals saw their winless streak hit nine straight (0-8-1). "Carleton is a very good team — they deserve their national ranking, no question about that.

"(Carleton) was just better in every facet of the game, it's that simple."

The Knights got on the board 17 minutes into the opening half, when Ross Hamilton beat SMU goalkeeper Jon Szafranski (Barrington, Ill.).

And that was just the beginning.

Christoph Terwitte and West Elfman would also find the back of the net in the opening half, as Carleton took a commanding 3-0 lead into the halftime break.

Things didn't get any better in the second half, either, as the high-powered Knights — unbeaten in their last 11 games (9-0-2) and off to their best start since opening 8-0-3 in 1977 — would score four more times, including two off the foot of Nate Amous to seal the win.

"We came out and played OK for a bit," Dembiec said. "But (Carleton) was just too much — they were just a better team."
