ST. PAUL, Minn. — Saint Mary's University women's soccer coach Chris Dembiec isn't a mathematician, but it didn't take him long Friday evening to realize the sum of the numbers — 11, 4 and 77 — wasn't going to add up in his Cardinals' favor.
There was the Cardinals' 11-game winless streak against the Scots, dating back to a 1-0 SMU win in 1995.
There was the Scots' current four-game losing streak — the first time Macalester has lost four straight in more than 20 years.
And there was Macalester's 77-game home MIAC unbeaten streak — a run of 69-0-8 since the 1993 season.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, the only streak that came to a halt Friday was the Scots' losing streak, as Macalester scored single goals in each half en route to a 2-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory.
"It was a tough loss, because I thought we played well enough to win." said SMU Chris Dembiec. "Our energy was extremely high and the effort was there — we just couldn't catch a break when we needed it."
Macalester opened the scoring with a free-kick goal in the first half, as Maddie Mette netted her first gola of the season. THe Scots made it 2-0 as Grace King netted her team-leading 10th goal of the season with less than six minutes remaining in regulation, sending SMU to its second straight MIAC shutout loss.
"It's tough to lose a game like this," admitted Dembiec. "The final score doesn't really tell the whole story. Giving up the goal in the first half put us in a hole, and (late in the second half) we had to press so much, it gave (Macalester) an easy opportunity for a that second goal.
"I'm not happy to lose, but I'm happy with the way we played."
