WINONA, Minn. — When you're winning, it always seems like the breaks and the bounces go your way.
And when you're losing, nothing seems to go in your favor.
Just ask the Saint Mary's University men's soccer team.
The Cardinals turned in one of their better all-around performances Saturday afternoon against Macalester. Yet, all SMU had to show for its efforts was a 2-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setback.
"It's frustrating, because the guys are playing their hearts out out there," said SMU coach Chris Dembiec, whose team has now dropped five straight, and has gone straight games with a win (0-9-1). "We just can't seem to catch a break or get the ball to bounce our way — all the breaks always seem to go against us.
"Today was another perfect example of that," Dembiec added. "We put together a really good attack, get a bad bounce, and boom, (Macalester) takes the ball down and scores. We make another bad decision late in the second half, and again, they make us pay for it.
"Both miscues are little things, but they show up big on the scoreboard."
After a scoreless first half, Carson Gorecki broke the deadlock four minutes into the second half, netting his team-leading seventh goal of the season. With less than seven minutes remaining in regulation, Eric Tettegah gave the Scots some breathing room, beating SMU goalkeeper
Jon Szafranski (Barrington, Ill.) with a shot to the lower left hand corner.
"Macalester has got some special players, but I thought we did a pretty good job of containing them," said Dembec, whose team returns to aciton Monday, stepping out of conference play to play host to North Central (Minn.) in a 3:30 p.m. game. "I'm proud of the way we played — (Macalester) has some good individual players, but I think we play a better team game.
"The guys are doing everything we could ask of them — I just wish they could get the end result they deserve."
