WINONA, Minn. — Their collegiate careers began with an 0-3-1 nonconference start, including a 1-0 loss to Simpson on Sept. 11, 2004.
From that point on, however, seniors
Kendra Maloney (Green Bay, Wis.), Lisa Tlougan (Rochester, Minn.), Madeline Pieper (Harvard, Ill.), Bridgette Baggio (Glenview, Ill.) and
Emily Duffey (Richfield, Minn.) — and the rest of the Saint Mary's University women's soccer team — were perfect in nonconference play.
Until Sunday afternoon, that is.
UW-Stout scored a pair of second-half goals — including the game-winner off the foot of Kaitlin Arjes with less than 17 minutes remaining in regulation — as the Blue Devils snapped SMU's 23-game nonconference winning streak with a 2-1 victory at Ochrymowycz Field.
"This was a tough loss," admitted SMU coach Chris Dembiec. "No so much because the streak ended — I didn't have a lot of do with that streak, being that this is my first year (as the Cardinals' head coach) — but because of the way it ended. We had this game under control and let it slip away.
"That's what's disappointing."
The Cardinals dominated the first half, pepping the UW-Stout net with six shots — including a header from
Amy Sibik (Onalaska, Wis.) that went over the head of Blue Devil goalkeeper Jessica Halvorson, hit the underside of the crossbar and settled in the net to give SMU a 1-0 halftime advantage.
The Blue Devils struck back 13 minutes into the second half on a goal by Michelle Hah, before Arjes sealed the win — and foiled the Cardinals' bid for their 24th straight nonconference win — 15 minutes later.
"We tried to make some adjustments in our system, but it nothing seemed to work in the second half," said Dembiec, whose team has now dropped four straight games in falling to 9-7-0 overall. "This was one of those games we played well enough to win — and we just didn't get the job done."
