WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's soccer team must have been licking their chops as Bethel came to town for Saturday's season finale.
After all, the Royals were in the midst of a season-high eight-game losing streak — not to mention the fact that they had not scored a goal in their last six-plus games, a span of 595 minutes that dates back to Andreas Scott's first-half goal in a 5-1 loss to Saint John's on Sept. 25.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, the Royals' offense decided to use Saturday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game as their coming out party, scoring two goals in the game's opening 45 minutes en route to a 2-0 victory over SMU.
"It's a disappointing way for the season to come to an end," said SMU coach Chris Dembiec, whose team dropped its 15th straight conference game — including all 10 this season. "I was a little surprised at the lack of energy on our part. We seemed really flat at the start, and once (Bethel) put that first goal in, it just deflated us even more."
Andreas Scott was a one-man wrecking crew for the Royals, as the freshman netted both of Bethel's goals, beating SMU goalkeeper
Jim Schultz (Kenosha, Wis.) in the game's 20th minute, and then again in the 32nd minute.
"We're pretty bruised and beat right now, and that certainly didn't help," said Dembiec, whose bench for the Bethel game was down to just six substitutes due to injuries. "Eveyrone's pretty down — our goal this week was to close out the season with two wins, and after beating Upper Iowa (
3-2 on Thursday), we were feeling pretty confident we could string to wins together.
"We just didn't have it today."
