WINONA, Minn. — It's been a season with a little bit of everything for the Saint Mary's University women's soccer team.
There was the season-opening five-game winning streak.
There was the extension of the team's nonconference winning streak to 23 games.
There was
Bridgette Baggio (Glenview, Ill.) scoring the overtime game-winner in a 1-0 win over St. Catherine.
There was even a season-high four-game losing streak.
About the only this season didn't have was a tie.
Thanks to Saturday's 0-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference deadlock at Ochrymowycz Field, you can cross that off the list, too.
"That was a phenomenal soccer game," said SMU coach Chris Dembiec, whose team closed out its first season under his direction with a 10-7-1 mark — eclipsing the 10-win plateau for the third straight season. "The ladies played their hearts out out there. It's one of those games that either team could have won, and a tie isn't necessarily all that bad."
Both teams had golden opportunities to pick up the season-ending win in the second 10-minute overtime period, as Bethel's Kelsey Dewey's left-footed shot beat SMU goalkeeper Marianna Sanchez
(Puebla, Mexico), but clanked squarely off the right post wiht three minutes remaining. Less than a minute later, SMU's
Amy Sibik (Onalaska, Wis.) broke in alone, but Bethel goalkeeper Charli Sorensen made a diving save to her right to rob the Cardinal freshman of her 13th goal of the season.
"It's kind of a fitting end to the season — about the only thing we haven't seen this year is a tie," said Dembiec. "I'm proud of the way this team has performed this year. They came into a tough situation with a new coach coming on board just before the start of the season, and they really made the best of it.
"For us to come away with 10 wins on the year, that's something this group can be proud of."
