Complete St. Olaf Quadrangular Results

NORTHFIELD, Minn. — If the Saint Mary's University freshmen thought they had seen it all after the first three weeks of the season, they had another thing coming.

Saturday afternoon, their collegiate swimming duties just doubled.

Along with the usual 100-meter events they were competing in during the early part of the Cardinals' schedule, SMU's newcomers got their first taste of the more grueling 200-meter events during the 16-event St. Olaf Quadrangular Saturday afternoon.

"Overall, it was a pretty good day for us," said SMU coach Eric Lindquist, whose men's team picked up a  143-109 win over Hamline and dropped a 184-87 decision to St.  Olaf, while the Cardinal women were 168-50 winners over Augsburg, but came up short against Hamline (145-111) and St. Olaf (214-67). "This was the first experience with 200-meter events for our younger swimmers, and I thought they handled it fairly well.

"It's a completely different meet when you are swimming 200s along with the 100s," said Lindquist of the teams' first 16-event meet of the season. "It was certainly a learning experience for everyone."

And if Saturday's results were any indication, the Cardinals' are quick studies.

Freshman Alyssa Lewandowski (Apple Valley, Minn.) showed no signs of fatigue from the double duty, placing second in the 50 freestyle (26:31) and third in the 100 freestyle (58.21), while also swimming the anchor leg in SMU's second-place 200 medley relay (2:01.65) and the lead-off leg in third-place 400 freestyle relay (4:10.21).

Danielle Braun (Cold Spring, Minn.), who was also a member of the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays, matched Lewandowski with a second in the 200 breaststroke (2:39.78) and a third in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.15). Kasey Schultz (Cary, Ill.) chipped in seconds in the 500 (6:12.32) and 1,000  (12:50.50) freestyle, while Courtney Keyler (Shorewood, Ill. / 200 backstroke, 2:30.75) and Jennifer Salzman (Hilo, Hawaii / 100 butterfly, 1:11.57) added fourth-place performances.

On the men's side, Curtis Kempton (Owatonna, Minn.) posted the Cardinals' lone first-place finish of the day, winning the one-meter voluntaries (136.75), while placing second in the one-meter optionals. John Fox (Winona, Minn. / 100 breaststroke, 1:04.08) and John DelMundo (Rochester, Minn. / 200 backstroke, 2:15.39) added second-place efforts, while David Ballard (Ramsey, Minn.) posted a second in the 1,000 freestyle (11:57.79) and a fourth in the 500 freestyle (5:49.16).

Eric Hills (Lake Elmo, Minn.) recorded a third-place time of 54.27 in the 100 freestyle, while DelMundo (100 backstroke, 1:01.14), Brian Joyce (Chicago, Ill. / 200 butterfly, 2:34.13) and Tom Walsh (Prior Lake, Minn. / 100 butterfly, 1:03.88; 50 freestyle, 24.11) chipped in fourth-place times.

"This was definitely a good learning experience for everyone," said Lindquist. "We had a number of season- and personal-bests, and anytime you do that, you've got to feel good about the effort these athletes put forth."
