ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's swimming and diving team put together a rather impressive performance when they beat Macalester 129-69 as part of the Hamline Quadrangular on Nov. 2.

Friday evening, the Cardinals and Scots squared off again, and this time around, the Cardinals were even more impressive, rolling to a 134-77 victory that included a sweep of the diving competition by Curtis Kempton (Owatonna, Minn.) and firsts by David Ballard (Ramsey, Minn.), John Fox (Winona, Minn.), John Delmundo (Rochester, Minn.) and Brian Joyce (Chicago, Ill.).

"The guys did a nice job, it was good to see them turn it up a notch (against the Scots) this time around," said SMU coach Eric Lindquist. "It was a solid performance all the way around."

The Cardinal women also turned in a solid performance, despite what the final scores said, as SMU got first-place efforts from Danielle Braun (Cold Spring, Minn.), Alyssa Lewandowski (Apple Valley, Minn.) and Sarah Hayden (Chatfield, Minn.) in dual-meet losses to St. Catherine (142-88) and Macalester (122-82).

Kempton continued his early season dominance of the diving events, as the SMU sophomore won both the one-meter (208.30) and three-meter (210.80). Fox chipped in a first in the 50 freestyle (22.26), while Delmundo added a first in the 100 freestyle (52.42). Ballard touched the wall first in the 1,650 freestyle (19:13.32), with Joyce winning the 100 breaststroke (1:09.56), outkicking Fox, who finished second (1:11.46).

Braun and Lewandowski led the way for the Cardinal women, with Braun winning the 100 breaststoke (1:12.72) and Lewandowski taking the 50 freestyle (26.77). Hayden, meanwhile, tallied SMU's other first-place finish with a score of 142.45 in the three-meter diving. The SMU senior was also second in the one-meter competition (144.55).

"I'm very happy with our performance," said Lindquist, whose team returns to the pool Saturday, taking part in the Macalester Invitational. "It's a busy weekend for us, and it's nice to grab a little positive momentum heading into the Mac Invite."
