ST. CLOUD, Minn. — On Friday, the Saint Mary's University women's hockey team, in the words of coach
Terry Mannor, did what it had to do to pull out a 4-3 victory in their Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener against Saint Benedict.
In the teams' rematch on Saturday, the Cardinals again did everything they needed to to win. Everything, that is, except score.
Despite holding a 41-21 advantage in shots on goal, the Cardinals came up empty each and every time, as the Blazers handed SMU a 1-0 setback to earn a split in the teams' two-game conference series.
“It's a tough loss to take in that, from the second period on, we dominated,” said Mannor, whose team outshot the Blazers 14-7 in the second period and 18-6 in the third — and got nothing to show for their efforts. “I thought we played very well, we just couldn't catch a break.
“(Friday) we did what we had to do to win,” added Mannor, whose team jumped out to a 3-0 lead, before holding off a late Blazer rally in Friday's win. “And today we certainly played well enough to win, we just couldn't put the puck in the net.”
With CSB goalie Amanda Plumm doing her Academy Award-winning impersonation of a brick wall, all the Blazers' offense needed was one goal — which they got five minutes into the third period.
“We made one mistake and they made us pay for it,” said Mannor, who got a 20-save effort from goalie Brittany Lemke
(St. Charles, Ill.), who kicked out 27 shots in posting her first collegiate victory with Friday's 4-3 win. “The effort was good, we created a ton of scoring opportunities, and we played well defensively.
“We just couldn't seem to buy a goal, it's that simple.”
