SUPERIOR, Wis. — There are ties that feel like losses.
And ties that can feel like a win.
In their season-opening 4-4 nonconference tie against ninth-ranked UW-Superior, the Saint Mary's University men's hockey team felt a little of both.
On the "winning" side, the Cardinals rallied from a 3-1 deficit, scoring four unanswered goals.
On the "losing" side, the Cardinals gave up the game-tying goal with less than two minutes remaining in regulation.
"It was a good way to start the season," admitted SMU coach Don Olson, noting his Cardinals had a pair of golden scoring opportunities late, but both
David Gross (Grasston, Minn.) and
Anthony Bohn (Spring Hill, Fla.) came up empty. "Both teams had some very good scoring chances in the third period and the overtime, it was one of those games that really could have gone either way."
After a scoreless first period, the Yellowjackets notched a pair of quick goals early in the second period to jump on top, 2-0. SMU got one back on a goal by
Adam Gill (Rochester, Minn.), but UW-Superior regained its two-goal lead eary in the third period
Then the Cardinals took control.
Mike Glaesmer (Traverse City, Mich.) netted the first of his two goals — the first two of his collegiate career — to cut the UW-Superior lead to 3-2, and
Jesse Polk (Hastings, Minn.) knotted the game at 3-3 whne the SMU senior converted a mid-period penalty shot. Glaesmer's second goal gave the Cardinals their first lead of the game, 4-3, but Andrew MacKenzie beat SMU goalie
Dan Smith (
Rochester, Minn.) for his second of the game with 1:48 remaining in regulation to tie the game, 4-4.
SMU had the better of the five-minute overtime, outshooting the Yellowjackets 4-1, but came up empty each time.
"It's disappointing to lose that 4-3 lead that late in the game, but on the flip side, we did a nice job of battling back from being down two goals," Olson added. "UW-Superior is a very good team, they are ranked No. 9 in the nation for a reason, and it was good for our guys to go out there and play right with them."
