ST. PAUL, Minn. — For Saint Mary's University swimming and diving coach Eric Lindquist, Friday's Hamline Quadrangular had its ups — and downs.

Both Cardinal teams  picked up dual-meet wins — the SMU men were 129-69 winners over Macalester, while the SMU women posted a convincing 138-45  victory over Augsburg.

That was the up.

The downs? A heartbreaking four-point, 109-105 men's loss to Hamline, and back-to-back losses by the women to the Pipers and Macalester.

"We had a ton of good swims," said Lindquist, whose women's team jumps right back in the pool Saturday, playing host to Concordia in a dual meet at the Jul Gernes Pool. "We had a lot of second-place overall finishes — which was good against Macalester (on the men's side) and Augsburg (on the women's side) — but those same seconds just weren't enough to get us over the hump against Hamline."

Curtis Kempton (Owatonna, Minn.) led the way for the Caridnals, sweeping the diving competition with victories in the one-meter (215.05) and the three-meter (175.00). David Ballard (Ramsey, Minn.) chipped in a first-place effort in the 1,000 freestyle (11:59.60), while Danielle Braun (Cold Spring, Minn.) continued her dominance in the 100 breaststroke, stopping the clock in 1:12.89 to win the event for the second straight meet, and John Fox (Winona, Minn.) won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:03.49.

Tom Walsh (Prior Lake, Minn. / 50 freestyle, 24.11), Alyssa Lewandowski (Apple Valley, Minn. / 50 freestyle, 26.87), Jennifer Salzman (Hilo, Hawaii / 100 butterfly, 1:10.80) and Eric HIlls (Lake Elmo, Minn. / 100 butterfly, 1:03.40), and Aaron Hayes (Winona, Minn. / 100 freestyle, 55.46) all posted second-place efforts, while Lewandowski (100 freeestyle, 1:00.32), Courtney Keyler (Shorewood, Minn. / 100 backstroke, 1:09.70), Tom Schultz (Chippewa Falls, Wis. / 100 backstroke, 1:06.42), and Brian Joyce (Chicago, Ill. / 200 freestyle, 2:03.65) recorded third-place performances.

"I'm very happy with the way we performed," said Lindquist. "It's a little disheartening to lose that four-point dual against Hamline on the guys side, but overall I was very pleased with what I saw."
