WINONA, Minn. — Eventually, the Saint Mary's University women's swimming and diving team is going to have to compete on three straight days when the Cardinals take part in the season-ending Minnesota intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships.
But in the season's second week, putting together solid back-to-back performances is hard enough.
Less than 24 hours after competing at the Hamline Quadrangular — in which SMU beat Augsburg, but came up short against Hamline and Macalester — the Cardinals didn't have much jump in their step Saturday, as visiting Concordia rolled to a 144-58 dual-meet win at the Jul Gernes Pool.
"Everyone was still recovering a bit from (Friday's meet), and it showed," said SMU coach
Eric Lindquist. "We know that by the end of the season, we need to be ready to be at our best for three straight days of competition, but this early in the year, it's tough on the athletes to have to go back-to-back."
If
Jen Salzman (Hilo, Hawaii) wasn't a bit tired after Friday's meet, she certainly was after Saturday's, as the Cardinal sophomore went back-to-back-to-back — placing second in the 100 butterfly (1:11.50), second in the 500 freestyle (6:06.58), and then swimming the second leg of SMU's second-place 400 freestyle relay.
"Jen's performance pretty much summed up the effort of the entire team today," said Lindquist. "For her to do three events, that close together, she really gutted it out."
Courtney Keyler (Shorewood, Minhn.) chipped in a second in the 200 freestyle (2:21.27), while
Sarah Hayden (Chatfield, Minn.) was second in the diving (1:56.25) and
Alyssa Lewandowski (Apple Valley, Minn.) was second in the 100 freestyle (1:01.11) and third in the 50 freestyle (27.52).
"Tired or not, this was a good meet for us," said Lindquist. "It's always nice to go up against teams from our conference in a dual-meet setting, just to see how you stack up."
