WINONA, Minn. — There's a reason they call them "special teams."

And the Saint Mary's University women's hockey team learned that the hard way Friday evening.

Gustavus scored on its first three powerplay opportunities — than added a short-handed tally for good measure — as the Gusties rolled to a 6-1 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory over the Cardinals at the SMU Ice Arena.

"Gustavus is a very good team, and you can't give a team like that that many powerplay opportunities," said SMU coach Terry Mannor, whose team gave up 13 shots on goal during the Gusties' seven man-advantage situations. "They have so much skill — it's tough enough to compete with them 5-on-5, much less 5-on-4."

The Cardinals actually got on the board first, as Cassie Stoner (Kenosha, Wis.) netted her first of the season on SMU's third shot of the game.

Unfortunately, all that did was make the Gusties angry — and if there's one thing you don't want to do it's make the Gusties angry.

GAC scored six unanswered goals — including back-to-back powerplay goals by Stefanie Ubl and Molly Doyle to end the first period, and another by Mari Gunderson 33 seconds into the second period. Kelsey Johnson, Ubl and Melissa Mackley would also beat SMU goalie Brittany Lemke (St. Charles, Ill.) before the final horn sounded, as the Gusties extended their unbeaten vs. SMU to 13 straight.

"Give (Gustavus) a lot of credit, they are very good — probably the best Gustavus team I've seen in my years here," said Mannor, whose team was outshot 49-13 — including 20-4 in the second period. "They move the puck well, the shoot well, and they make the most of the opportunities that present themselves.

"When we fell behind 2-1, I think we started to fear them a bit, and we let them win all the races to loose pucks," Mannor added. "We didn't play our best game by an stretch of the imagination, and against a team as good as (Gustavus), nothing but your best will do."
