WINONA, Minn. —After allowing Gustavus to attempt 98 shots including 49 that found their way to goalie Brittany Lemke
(St. Charles, Ill.) — the Saint Mary's University women's hockey team tried to get a little defensive in Saturday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rematch.
It didn't work.
The Gusties managed only 63 shots attempts — and Lemke only had to handle 34 — but the end result was the same, as Gustavus scored in every period, including three times in the third, en route to a 6-0 victory over the Cardinals at the Don Roberts Ice Arena.
"What can I say? They are a very good team," said SMU coach
Terry Mannor, whose team dropped a 6-1 decision in Friday's first game of the two-game conference series at the SMU Ice Arena. "They move the puck so well, we just couldn't seem to get anything going."
The Cardinals, who struggled to a season-low 13 shots on goal in Friday's loss, found the going equally as tough on Saturday, as GAC held SMU to a new low eight shots on goal.
"(Gustavus) took away all of our time and space, and that really seemed to frustrate us," said Mannor, whose team only attempted 12 shots, and was held to one shot on goal in the game's opening 20 minutes. "It didn't seem to matter what we tried to do, they were all over us."
In a repeat performance of Friday, the Gusties took advantage of their powerplay opportunities, scoring three powerplay goals — one in each period — giving GAC six powerplay tallies in the two-game series.
"Their powerplay was the best we've seen — and probably will see all year," said Mannor. "They move the puck so well, no matter how we tried to defend, they found a way to get the puck to the open player."
Jenna Johnson and Alyssa Saunders gave the Gusties a 2-0 first-period advantage, while Lynn Hillen accounted for GAC's next two goals — the second 1:45 into the third period — and Allie Harwood and Mari Gunderson closed out the scoring with goals three minutes apart late in the third stanza.
"I don't think we played as well as we are capable of playing, but Gustavus had a lot to do with that," said Mannor, whose team has now dropped four straight — and been outscored 16-2 in the process — heading into next weekend's conference series against Concordia. "We've just got to keep plugging away, that's all we can do at this point."
