WINOINA, Minn. — For 38 minutes, the Saint Mary's University men's basketball team matched Hamline basket-for-basket.

If  the Pipers tossed in a three, the Cardinals matched them.

If it was a Hamline put-back underneath, SMU had an answer.

For 38 minutes.

In that other two minutes — late  in the second half — the Cardinals ran out of answers, as Hamline turned a 72-72 tie with less than four minutes remaining in regulation into an 85-75 advantage with just over a minute to play en route to a 93-83 victory at the SMU Gym.

The Cardinals, who turned in their best offensive effort of the season, trailed by six, 42-36, at the half, chipped away at the Piper lead, finally pulling even at 65-65 on a Will Wright (Chicago, Ill.) 3-pointer with 8:30 remaining. The Pipers pushed the lead back to five, 70-65, only to have SMU tie things up for a sixth and final time on a 3-pointer by Lukas Holland (La Crosse, Wis.) with 4:33 left to play.

From there, however, the Pipers took control, using their 13-3 two-minute run to put the game out of reach — and keep the Cardinals (0-3 MIAC, 0-6 Overall) searching for their first win of the season.

Wright finished wiht a team-high 22 points, marking the fourth straight game that the SMU freshman has netted 20 or more points, while Holland chipped in a career-best 20 points and Dan Cormier (Blaine, Minn.) finished with 16. Eric Clute led a quartet of Pipers in double figures, netting a game-high 28  points, while Carl HIpp added 20 and Tony Thrasher and Brandon Hayes finished with 15 and 14 points, respectively.
