WINOINA, Minn. — Saint Mary's University women's basketball coach Mandy Pearson must have felt like she had stepped into a time warp Wednesday evening.

Two nights ago at Macalester, the Saint Mary's University women's basketball team entered the second half trailing the Scots by two, 28-26, only to manage 19 second-half points in falling 58-45.

Wednesday, the Cardinals found themselves staring at a three-point, 37-34, deficit after the game's opening 20 minutes — and once again, a second-half chill frosted over the SMU basket.

The Cardinals made just 8 of 29 field goal attempts — including just 1 of 11 from behind the 3-point line — as the Pipers pulled away for a 79-65 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory at the SMU Gym.

Trailing by just three at the break, the Cardinals suddenly found themselves staring at a 10-point deficit, ,as Hamline rattled off the first seven points of the second half. SMU responded with a six-point run of its own to cut the gap to four, 44-40, with 15:07 left, but that was as close as the Cardinals would get, as Hamline rebuilt its lead to as many as 19 points on three separate occasions in keeping SMU winless in the MIAC.

Jess Weisbrod (Rollingstone, Minn.) tried  her best to hoist the Cardinals on her shoulders, as the SMU senior collected her second double-double in the last three games, tossing in 17 points and adding 15 rebounds. Jess Miller (Carver, Minn.) also scored in double figures for SMU, netting 12 points, while Mary Wilkowski poured in a game-high 24 points and Krystal Tschumperlin added 20 for the Pipers.
