WINONA, Minn. — Putting an end to their season-high five-game losing streak was easy as 1-2-3 for the Saint Mary's University women's hockey team Saturday afternoon.

The Cardinals scored single goals in all three periods Saturday — and got 36 saves from freshman goalie Brittany Lemke (St. Charles, Ill.) — as SMU put an end to its losing ways with a 3-0 victory over Concordia at the SMU Ice Arena.

"We played two really good periods (Friday), and the period we didn't play well came back to haunt us," said SMU coach Terry Mannor, whose team outshot the Cobbers 29-9 in the first and third periods, combined — but we outshot 16-7, and outscored 3-0, in the second in Friday's 4-3 loss to Concordia. "Today we put together three pretty solid periods. I wouldn't say we played 60 minutes of our best hockey, but we came pretty close."

Madison Sienko (Mendota Heights, Minn.) — who scored her first collegiate goal in Friday's loss — picked up right where she left off Saturday, netting career goals No. 2 and 3 — in the first and second periods, respectively — to give SMU a 2-0 lead after two periods of play. Jenn Shire (Anaheim Hills, Calif.) closed out the scoring for the Cardinals, netting her first of the season midway through the game's final peirod.

And while Sienko and Co. were doing their part in the Cobbers' end of the ice — pelting Concordia goalie Julie York with 21 shots — Lemke was a  brick wall at the other end, stopping all 36 Cobber shots for her first collegiate shut out.

"We needed a game like this — a game in which we played solid at both ends of the ice," said Mannor, whose team is now off until Jan. 5,  when the Cardinals travel to Lake Forest for a two-game nonconference series. "Everyone was pretty disappointed (after Friday's loss), and it was good to see them bounce back and play the way they are capable of playing."
