SMU can't slow Wildcats in 2nd half in dropping 91-43 decision

ST. PAUL, Minn. — The last time the Saint Mary's University women's basketball team gave up 70 or more points, it was against St. Catherine, and the end result was a 71-58 home loss on Jan. 8.

The Cardinals got their second shot at the Wildcats Monday evening, and, unfortunately for SMU, Round 2 wasn't any better than Round 1.

In fact, it was worse.

The Cardinals managed just 19 points in the game's opening 20 minutes, then surrendered 53 second-half points to the Wildcats, as St. Catherine cruised to a 91-43 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win.

SMU got out of the gates quickly against CSC, holding leads of 2-0, 4-2, 6-4, 8-6 and, finally, 9-6 when Jessica Weisbrod (Rollingstone, Minn.) completed a three-point play with 15:04 remaining in the first half.

Over the final 15 minutes, however, the Wildcats outscored SMU 32-10, and never looked back in scoring the most points against the Cardinals this season — and the most since SMU surrendered 92 in a 92-53 loss to Concordia on Jan. 15, 2000.

Trailing by 19 at the break, the Cardinals never threatened in the second half, as CSC scored 23 of the first 26 points en route to their 53-point second-half outburst.

Weisbrod, who netted a career-high 24 points en route to her sixth double-double of the season last Saturday in a loss against Gustavus, shared the team's scoring lead against St. Catherine with teammate Dusty Benham (Deer River, Minn.), as the two each netted 10 points.

Rachel Berglund led a trio of CSC scorers in double figures, scoring a game-high 20 points as the Wildcats snapped a three-game losing streak, while handing SMU its sixth straight loss.
