Box Score Game Summary
WINONA, Minn. — It was 2-for-1 night at the Saint Mary's University Ice Arena Friday evening.
Two-for-one, as in two Cardinal goals in one period — the first.
Two-for-one, as in two St. Olaf goals in one period — the second.
And, most importantly for the Cardinals, two-for-one, as in two goals by one player —
Amy Madden (East Grand Rapids, Mich.), who scored the game-winner with less than six minutes remaining in regulation to lift the SMU women's hockey team to a 3-2 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory.
"This was a nice win," said SMU coach
Terry Mannor, whose Cardinals have now won three straight for the first time all season — scoring three goals in each of those three games. "We worked hard all week in practice, and everyone stuck to the game play and did the things we worked on — and we did them well enough to get the victory."
The Cardinals were unstoppable in the first period, getting goals from Madden and
Jessica Ribish (Elm Grove, Wis.) four minutes apart — on two of their first five shots on goal — as SMU took what appeared to be a commanding two-goal cushion into the locker room after 20 minutes.
St. Olaf turned the tables on the Cardinals in the second period, getting a pair of shots past SMU goalie
Nikki Jung (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) to knot the game at 2-2 head into the final period of play.
And in that final 20 minutes, it was Madden to the rescue, as the SMU senior tallied her second of the game and ninth of the season with 5:49 remaining to lift the Cardinals to the win.
"I thought we played very well in the first period, and then in the second we kind of let down a bit — we were playing not to lose, rather than playing to win," said Mannor. "Getting out to the two-goal lead is nice, but it's also easy to lose your intensity a bit, and that's what happened to us.
"Fortunately, we were able to regroup in the third period and get the job done."
