PELLA, Iowa — The Saint Mary's University men's tennis team made it look easy early Saturday afternoon, as the Cardinals cruised to a 9-0 nonconference victory over Buena Vista.
Unfortunately, the shoe was on the other foot for the Cardinals in their second match of the day.
As tough as the Cardinals made things for Buena Vista in the opener match, Central-Iowa made things equally as tough in their second match, as the Dutch handed SMU an 8-1 nonconference setback.
The Cardinals was all six singles matches against Buena Vista in straight sets, dropping just 15 games in the 10 sets, while losing just four games in winning the three doubles matches, 8-2, 8-1 and 8-1.
Steve Grundhoefer (St. Paul, Minn.) collected SMU's lone win against the Dutch, rallying from one set down for a 2-6, 6-4, 10-7 win at No. 2 singles. That, however, was the Cardinals' lone bright spot, as Central won the other five singles — including a 7-5, 7-5 victory over
Adam Solseth (Shakopee, Minn.) at No. 3 and a 4-6, 6-3, 10-4 win over Steve Clements (La Crosse, Wis.) at No. 4 — while outlasting the Cardinals in all three doubles matches, winning 8-5, 8-6 and 8-6.
