WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University fastpitch softball team picked the wrong time for both its pitching and its offense to take a game off.

Fresh off their fourth shutout in their last five games — a three-hit complete-game masterpiece by Stacy O'Malley (Lake Elmo, Minn.) in a 4-0 SMU win — the Cardinals managed just one run on six hits, while Gustavus battered a pair of SMU pitchers for six runs on nine hits as the Gusties earned a split in the teams' Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader with a 6-1 win.

With O'Malley limiting the Gusties to just three hits — a single in the fifth, a single in the sixth and a double in the seventh — the Cardinals scored all the runs they would need with a solo run in the second as Gina Rizzardi (Woodbury, Minn.) on a wild pitch. SMU added three more runs in the fourth, highlighted by a two-run double by Rizzardi and an RBI single by Annie Hovde (Cottage Grove, Minn.).

In the nightcap, it was the Gusties who got all the timely hits, scoring three times off SMU starter Lindsay Mamer (Mankato, Minn.) in the second, then adding solo runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings of reliever Jennifer Gonerka (St. Paul, Minn.) to seal the win.

With the loss, SMU (10-2 MIAC, 19-7 overall) falls two games back of league-leading St. Thomas in the conference standings, while Gustavus moves to 9-4 in the MIAC and 17-12 overall.
