WINONA, Minn. — After giving up 21 runs and 24 hits against St. Olaf Monday, Saint Mary's University baseball coach Nick Whaley wanted nothing more than to completely forget about the ninth-ranked Oles and turn his focus on Tuesday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader at Augsburg.

Problem was, Whaley and the Cardinals still had the second game to play against St. Olaf.

The Oles erupted for six runs in each of the first two innings and never looked back in handing the Cardinals a 21-1 Game 1 setback Monday afternoon. And the Oles weren't much kinder in the second game, as St. Olaf completed the sweep with a 7-1 victory.

Andrew Schmeising led the Oles' hit parade in the opener, going 5-foir-6 with three doubles, a home run, four runs scored and four RBIs. In fact, the St. Olaf junior had nearly as many hits (five) as the entire Cardinal team (seven).

The Oles did not let SMU starter Mike Mitchell (Mound, Minn.) get out of the first inning. In fact, Mitchell lasted just one-third of an inning, as St. Olaf tagged him for six runs (all earned) on six hits, while also taking advantage of two Mitchell walks. Brett Ferschweiler (Rochester, Minn.) didn't fare much better, giving up six more runs — again, all earned — in the second inning

All told, St. Olaf banged out its 24 Game 1 hits against six SMU pitchers, plating five more runs in the sixth and four more in the seventh, before the Cardinals finally broke the shutout on an RBI single by Joe Krause (St. James, Minn.) in the bottom of the seventh.

David Baker (Monticello, Minn.) gave the Cardinals the pitching performance they so desperately needed, holding the high-powered Oles to single runs in the fourth and fifth, before giving way to Matt Popek (Eagan, Minn.) to start the sixth.

Like Mitchell and Ferschweiler, St. Olaf feasted on the SMU senior's offerings — not to mention two SMU errors — as the Oles collected five runs (only one earned) on five hits off Popek in the sixth to turn a 2-1 nailbiter into a 7-1 rout.

The Cardinals, who fell to 0-4 in the MIAC and 4-11 overall, return to action Tuesday, traveling to Augsburg for a conference doubleheader.
