WINONA, Minn. — "It's never over 'til it's over."

New York Yankees' great Yogi Berra may have coined the phrase, but the Saint Mary's University baseball team lived it in 2007.

*April 13: SMU held a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning against Augsburg, only to give up a game-tying run in the seventh and a game-winning run in the eighth in a 4-3 loss to Augsburg.

*April 13, Part II: Up 2-1 with three outs to go, only to have the Auggies plate two seventh-inning runs to beat SMU, 3-2.

*April 18: Down to their last out, the Cardinals scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning — three on a home run by Brady Knudsen (Racine, Wis.) — to beat Macalester, 8-5.

*April 21: SMU entered the top of the seventh inning tied with Gustavus 5-5 — and lost, 9-5 when the Gusties scored four times in the final at-bat.

*April 24: The Cardinals held a 14-13 lead in the bottom of the seventh against Bethel — only to have Dana Hegman belt a one-out home run and Tim Oesterlin deliver an RBI double to lead the Royals to a 15-14 win.

The Cardinals proven Berra correct on more than one occasion — and Wednesday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader against Concordia was no exception.

Only this time around, the shoe was on the other foot.

Twice.

The Cardinals rallied from a 5-4 seventh-inning deficit to beat the Cobbers 6-5 in Game 1, then turned around and did themselves one better in the nightcap, scoring three seventh-inning runs to hand Concordia a second straight 6-5 setback at Max Molock Field.

"It's a crazy game, I think we've proven this year that nothing is every certain until the final out is made," said SMU coach Nick Whaley, whose team closed out its season with a 6-14 record in the MIAC and a 10-21 overall mark. "This team has battled all season — every game, no matter what the score, or what the situation, they went out there and battled.

"There's been a lot of (seventh-inning) heartache — it was kind of nice to be on the other end for a change."

After rallying from a 5-2 deficit with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth in Game 1, Nick Winecke (St. Paul, Minn.) kicked off the Cardinals' seventh with a one-out single. An error on Concordia shortstop Jake Krause put runners on first and second, and SMU's Brandon Haugh (Easton, Minn.) followed with a bases-clearing double down the right field line.

Game 2 proved to be a mirror image of the first, as Concordia scored a pair of first-inning runs — for the second game in a row — and led 5-3 with the Cardinals coming to bat in the bottom of the seventh. Haugh opened the inning with a single, moved to second on an infield single by Kevin Black (Mahtomedi, Minn.) and, after Black was thrown out at third on Nick Kuhn's (Chicago, Ill..) fielder's choice, Robbie Johnson (Lake Elmo, Minn.) pulled SMU within one, 5-4, with an RBI double down the right-field line. David Krieger (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) then completed the Cardinals' comeback with a double to deep right-center, scoring both Johnson and Kuhn.

"When we rallied to win that first game, I thought that was pretty fitting, but then for us to do it again (in the second game), that's pretty amazing," said Whaley. "We've said all season long, our goal was to go out and play the game of baseball the way it was meant to be played, and to work hard to improve every single day — and we've done that.

"To end the season with two wins like that, it's a perfect way for our seniors to end their careers, and it's a nice boost for the returners as we start looking ahead to next season."
