Match Summary
HASTINGS, Minn. — Every season, Saint Mary's University men's golf coach is looking for one thing — a handful of rounds in the 70s every time the Cardinals take the course.
Friday morning, the Cardinals took the course for the first time this season, squaring off against Macalester in a dual meet at the Hastings Country Club, and Farren got a pair of rounds in the 70s — a 78 from
Rob Klein (Lake Bluff, Ill.) and a 79 from
Josh Wendel (Rosemount, Minn.).
But the SMU head coach also got something he hasn't seen in his 10 years as the Cardinals' head coach — a round in the 60s.
#Jesse Polk
(Hastings, Minn.), playing on his home course, took advantage of that home-course advantage to card a medalist round of three-under-par 69 to lift the Cardinals to a 308-333 dual-meet win over the Scots.
"It was great to see Jesse come out and shoot lights-out like that," said Farren. "(Polk) has been playing well all summer, and it was good to see him pick right up and fire a great round like that today. If we are going to be competitive in the MIAC, we are going to have to start putting up some scores in the low 70s and high 60s — it's happening all around us."
As impressed as Farren was with Polk's three-under effort, the SMU coach was equally impressed with the Cardinals' 308 team score
.
"For us to shoot 308, that's wonderful — especially considering we haven't been able to get on a course and practice all week (due to the flooding that hit Southeastern Minnesota)," said Farren, who also got an 82 from
Tony Hynes (Lino Lakes, Minn.) and an 83 from
Andy Roberts (Rochester, Minn.) to round out his top five. "This was a very nice way for us to kick off the season."
