WINONA, Minn. — Despite a 2-0 season-opening victory, Saint Mary's University women's soccer coach Chris Dembiec was a little  concerned about his team's struggles finishing on more of its chances during the Cardinals victory over Wisconsin Luther Saturday.

The Cardinals didn't waste any scoring chances on Sunday, and SMU's ability to finish finished off Martin Luther, as Saint Mary's crushed the Knights 9-1 in a nonconference game at Ochrymowycz Field.

"That was a much better offensive performance," understated Dembiec, whose team pushed its nonconference winning streak to 19 straight with the lopsided win. "We came into (Sunday's) game with two goals in mind — put together more touches before a shot on goal, and finish more of our scoring chances — and we definitely achieved both goals."

Melissa Paulson (Ham Lake, Minn.) got the Cardinals off and running, scoring a pair of goals six minutes apart — both off picture-perfect feeds from Bridgette Baggio (Glenview, Ill.) — to give SMU a 2-0 advantage in the game's opening 10 minutes.

By the time the first half ended, Lauren Mazzuca (Maple Grove, Minn.) and Amy Sibik (Onalaska, Wis.) added unnassisted tallies as SMU pushed their lead to 4-1.

And the Cardinals were just getting warmed up.

Sibik would net her second of the game — and third of the young season — while Kendra Maloney (Green Bay, Wis.), Lisa Tlougan (Rochester, Minn.), Dana Winkler (Lake Geneva, Wis.) and Nadia Effendi (St. Paul, Minn.) would also beat Martin Luther goalie Amanda Koch to complete the rout.

"I was happy with a lot of the goals we scored," said Dembiec. "We scored off good build-ups, good serves and some nice one-on-ones."

"We're off to a good start, but we aren't about to get too worked up about (a 2-0 start)," said Dembiec. "We've built a good foundation with these two wins, but we've still got a lot of work to do."
