ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's soccer team put an end to one streak when
Joey Manley (Racine, Wis.) found the back of the net five minutes into the second half — snapping a run of more than 266 minutes without scoring a goal.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, Manley's second-half heroics may have ended one streak, but it wasn't enough to put an end to an even more important one — a three-game losing streak.
Hamline score two goals in an 18-minute span — the first just nine minutes after Manley's goal — to beat SMU 2-1 and hand the Cardinals their fourth straight loss.
"This was a tough loss — I thought we played well enough to win," said SMU coach Chris Dembiec, whose Cardinals have not won since a
3-0 win over Northland on Sept. 9. "Hamline is a very athletic team, and that athleticism proved to be our downfall — they just wore us down."
After a scoreless first half, Manley finally got the Cardinals on the scoreboard, netting his team-leading third goal of the season. The lead, however, was short-lived, as Hamline's
Courtney Duffield beat SMU goalkeeper Jim Schultz (Kenosha, Wis.) nine minutes later. The Pipers then got what proved to be the game-winner 18 mintues later, as Jason Werthmann's shot beat Schultz in the game's 78th minute.
"It's the same story — we made two crucial mistakes on a pair of deadball situations, and (Hamline) made us pay for it," said Dembiec, whose team returns to action Sunday, traveling to Ripon for a nonconference game. "Little mistakes are hurting us big time."
