RIPON, Wis. — The Saint Mary's University women's soccer team entered Sunday's game against Ripon fresh off a 4-0 victory over Hamline that included a pair of goals from both
Bridgette Baggio (Glenview, Ill.) and
Amy Sibik (Onalaska, Wis.).
The Cardinals were also riding a 21-game nonconference winning streak.
Ninety minutes later, Baggio and Sibik had accounted for three of the Cardinals' four goals — and that winning streak had reached 22 in a row.
Baggio scored her team-leading ninth goal of the season — including eight goals in SMU's last five games — while Sibik posted her second straight two-goal effort, as the Cardinals cruised to a 4-1 victory over the Red Hawks.
"Our offensive production has been amazing," said SMU coach Chris Dembiec, whose team has outscored its first seven opponents 34-4 en route to its 7-1-0 overall record. "Bridgette and Amy have been virtually unstoppable of late, they've been a lot of fun to watch."
Unless, of course, you are the Cardinals' opponent.
Baggio got the Cardinals on the board midway through the first half, and Sibik added the first of her two goals with less than two minutes remaining as SMU took a 2-0 advantage into the halftime break.
Bethany Kaufmann (Green Bay, Wis.) pushed SMU's lead to 3-0, and, after Ripon's
Rachel Martzahl foiled Marianna Sanchez's (Puebla, Mexico) shutout bid in the game's 60th minute, Sibik iced the win with her eighth goal of the season.
"We played very well," understated Dembiec, whose Cardinals held a 15-2 advantage in shots on goal. "We've built up a lot of positive momentum — hopefully we can keep that going as we head into the meat of our (conference) schedule."
