WINONA, Minn. — If Saint Mary's University men's soccer coach Chris Dembiec had it to do over again, he may have had his team save up a few of those goals they scored in Sunday's 3-3 nonconference tie against Ripon.
They sure could have used them Tuesday against Gustavus.
The Gusties came into Tuesday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference showdown with the Cardinals boasting a 7-1-0 record — with their only two goals allowed all season coming in a 2-0 los
s to UW-Oshkosh on Sept. 9.
In other words, in their seven wins, Gustavus had not allowed a single goal.
Make that eight wins and not goals as thet Gusties left the field Tuesday with that impressive shutout streak still in tact.
Gustavus got second-half goals from Bret FVander Streek and Fraser Horton in handing the Cardinals a 2-0 setback at Ochrymowycz Field.
"I sure can't fault the effort — the guys left it all on the field," said Dembiec, who was forced to play the game without several regulars due to injuries and a pair of red-card altercations during Sunday's game vs. Ripon. "We've known since the beginning of the year that we were going to have our hands full against Gustavus — and that was when we thought we'd be at full strength. Add to that the injuries and what-not, and we just couldn't keep up with them in the second half."
The Cardinals batlted the nationally ranked Gusties to a scoreless tie through the game's opening 45 minutes, but with limited subs, SMU couldn't keep pace in the final 45 mnutes. Vander Streek got the Gusties on the board 22 minutes into the second half, and Horton gave GAC some breathing room with his first of the season five minutes later.
"Gustavus is a very good team — there's a reason they are ranked among the nation's top 25," said Dembiec, who saw his team's winless streak climb to six with the shutout loss. "Nobody likes to lose, but when you put forth the effort that these guys did, it makes it a little easier to swallow."
