MOORHEAD, Minn. — Winless in their last six games, and floundering in the midst of a three-game Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference losing streak, the Saint Mary's University men's soccer team entered Saturday's game against Concordia with one goal in mind — keep the losing streak in tact.
Not theirs, the Cobbers'.
While SMU hadn't won a game since a
3-0 victory over Northland on Sept. 8, Concordia took the field Saturday in midst of a six-game losings treak — not to mention a slide of 35 straight conference games without a victory.
When the final horn sounded at Jake Christensen Field, the winless streak was intact — unfortunately for the Cardinals, it was their winless streak, not Concordia's.
Matt Klein and Marco Riboli both scored second half goals and goalkeeper Kirby Johnson stopped the Cardinals' lone shot on goal, as the Cobbers blanked SMU 2-0, extending the Cardinals' winless streak to seven — and, more importantly, ending that 35-game winless streak that encompassed four coaches, over 3,200 minutes played and 1,433 calendar days.
"This was a tough one to swallow," said SMU coach Chris Dembiec, whose Cardinals were shut out for the second straight game. "We just did not come out with any fire — we were flat from start to finish. I don't know what it was, but we just didn't have the energy that we needed."
After a scoreless first half, Klein gave the Cobbers all the offense they would need, beating SMU goalkeeper
Jon Szafranski (Barrington, Ill.) in the game's 62nd minute. Riboli then gave Concordia a little breathing room as he netted the Cobbers' second goal 10 minutes later.
"Once they pushed that first goal through, that really deflated us," said Dembiec, whose team was on the short end of a 16-1 edge in shots on goal. "We couldn't seem to get anything going all day — it certainly wasn't one of our best efforts."
