MOORHEAD, Minn. — The cold and snow of winter isn't due to hit the Midwest for at least another two months, but, unfortunately for Saint Mary's University women's soccer coach Chris Dembiec, the Cardinals' offense has decided to go into hibernation early.
Just three days after managing a lone, first-half tally in
a 2-1 loss to Gustavus on Wednesday, the Cardinals were held without a goal for the first time all season, as Concordia — fueled by first-half goals from Rachel Lewis and Sam Johnson seven minutes apart — blanked SMU 3-0 in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game.
"It's frustrating, we just haven't been able to generate any sustained offense the last couple of games," said Dembiec, whose team erupted for 34 goals in opening the season 7-1 — only to be outscored 5-1 in a span of four days. "I thought we controlled the play for a fair amount of the time, we just weren't able to generate any real good offensive chances.
"(Concordia) on the other hand, created some nice chances, and they cashed in on them."
Lewis got Concordia on the board in the game's 18th minute, netting her fifth goal of the season. Johnson pushed that Cobber lead to 2-0 with her fourth of the season — an unassisted tally — seven minutes later. Vanessa Kowalski then put the game out of reach, scoring her first of the season with less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation.
"Give Concordia credit, they are a good team with some very talented individuals," said Dembiec, whose team managed just a single shot on goal, while the Cobbers put eight on SMU goalkeepers Marianna Sanchez (Puebla, Mexico) and Lauren Mess (Lake Geneva, Wis.). "The key now is to put this game behind us. We've still got a lot of soccer to play this season, and it won't do us any good to dwell on this game — the important thing for us is to learn from our mistakes today and move on."
