WINONA, Minn. — On paper, Saturday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game between the Saint Mary's University and Carleton men's basketball teams appeared to be a mismatch.
.
Afterall, the Knights arrived in Winona boasting a impressive 9-2 overall record — including wins in three of their last four games — while the Cardinals were struggling through a 1-10 season, and were coming off a disappointing performance in an 85-79 loss at Gustavus on Monday.
Unfortuanately for the Cardinals, what transpired on the court was similar to the "paper" version, as Carleton raced out to a 26-18 first-half advantage and never looked back in handing SMU a 62-51 setback at the SMU Gym.
The Cardinals struggled to find their offensive rhythm all afternoon, shooting just 28 percent (17-for-59) from the field. Leading scorer
Will Wright (Chicago, Ill.) finished with a team-high 16 points, but the freshman sharp-shooter didn't score his first basket until the 16th minute of the game.
Eric Lear (Antioch, Ill.) chipped in a season-best 13 points, while
Dan Cormier (Blaine, Minn.,), who missed Monday's game vs. Gustavus with an elbow injury, chipped in 10 points and five rebounds.
Zach Johnson poured in a game-high 16 points and added 10 rebounds to pace the Knights, who moved to 10-2 overall and 5-2 in the conference with the win. Bryan Rosett added 12 points, while Carter Biewen and Tommy Drake added 11 and 10 points, respectively.
The Cardinals, who fall to 1-6 in conference play and 1-11 overall, return to action Wednesday, traveling to Augsburg for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
