WINONA, Minn. — Wednesday evening,
Jess Weisbrod (Rollingstone, Minn.) was held to a career-low two points, as the Saint Mary's University senior was just 1 of 8 from the field and did not attempt a free throw in the Cardinals' 79-62 loss at St. Catherine.
Saturday afternoon, the Cardinals' leading scorer eclipsed both of those marks — in the game's first three minutes.
Which was good new for the Cardinals — and bad news for Carleton.
Very bad news.
Weisbrod scored 11 of her game-high 14 points in the first half, and added 11 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season and 13th of her career, helping the Cardinals to a come-from-behind, 63-60 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win over the visiting Knights at the SMU Gym.
After a first half that saw 10 ties and a lead of no more than four points — and sent Carleton into the locker room with a two-point, 31-29 advantage — Carleton used a 13-7 run to grab an eight-point, 44-36 advantage through the first seven minutes of the second half. Carleton equaled that eight-point advantage on a three-point play by Ally Weaver to give the Knights a 49-41 lead with 9:32 remaining.
The Cardinals got down to business — thanks in large part to the generosity of the Knights.
Over the next seven minutes, Carleton would turn the ball over six times, and when Alysse Coates (West St. Paul, Minn.) scored on a driving layup with 2:43 remaining, the Cardinals had the lead for good, 57-56.
Along with Weisbrod's game-high 14 points, the Cardinals — who snapped a two-game losing streak with the win — got 12 points from
Jess Miller (Carver, Minn.), while Sarah Lincoln's 11 points were tops for the Knights, who were forced into 22 turnovers.
The Cardinals (2-6 MIAC, 3-8 overall) return to action Wednesday, playing host to Augsburg in a 7:30 p.m. MIAC game..
