WINONA, Minn. — For the second game in a row, the Saint Mary's University women's basketball team found themselves in a game that went right down to the wire — a game that could easily go either way.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, unlike Saturday's 63-60 nailbiting win over Carleton, Wednesday's final result did not go in their favor, as Augsburg outscored SMU 24-21 in the game's opening 20 minutes and never relinquished its lead, as the Auggies handed SMU a 62-58 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setback at the SMU Gym.
Jess Weisbrod (
Rollingstone, Minn.) tossed in a game- and season-high 26 points and pulled down 11 rebounds for her second-straight double — her fifth of the season and 14th of her four-year SMU career — but it was not enough, as SMU fell for the third time in its last four games.
Kelly Tanke (La Crosse, Wis.) chipped in 11 points, as the senior duo accounted for 37 of the team's 58 points.
The Auggies pushed their three-point, 24-21 halftime advantage to 10 points, 49-39, with 7:11 remaining, before the Cardinals made one final push, cutting the gap to two, 53-51 with 3:16 remaining on a three-point play by Weisbrod.
That, however, was as close as the Cardinals would get, as Augsburg used a 7-1 run over the next two minutes to push the lead back to eight, 60-52, and ice the win.
Christa Suedbeck scored 18 points to lead a trio of Auggie players in double figures, as Augsburg improved to 3-6 in the MIAC and 5-8 overall, while SMU fell to 2-7 in conference play and 3-9 overall.
