ST. PAUL, Minn. — There were plenty of second-place finishes for the Saint Mary's University swimming and diving teams Friday evening.
Which is a good thing, when you are competing at a three-, four- or five-team invitational.
But when it's a dual meet — and only the top three place finishes count — seconds aren't quite good enough.
"We had a lot of good swims, we just weren't quite deep enough to keep up with (St. Thomas)," said SMU coach
Eric Lindquist, whose men's team dropped a 52-39 decision to the Tommies, while the Cardinal women came out on the short end of a 55-33 outcome. "We put together a lot of second-place performances, but (St. Thomas) had a lot of firsts, and that was the difference."
Danielle Braun (Cold Spring, Minn.) and
John Fox (Winona, Minn.) each collected first-place performances for SMU, as the Cardinals swept the 100 breaststoke competition, with Braun winning in 1:13.06, while Fox touched the wall in 1:03.00.
Eric Hills (Lake Elmo, Minn.) and
Tom Walsh (Prior Lake, Minn.) went 1-2 in the 100 butterfly, with Hills out-touching his sophomore teammate 1:03.50 to 1:03.56.
David Ballard (Ramsey, Minn.) added a second in the 1,000 freestyle (11:37.03), while Jon Delmundo
(Rochester, Minn.) was second in both the 100 (53.37) and 200 (1:58.62) freestyle, and
Brian Joyce (Chicago, Ill.) was second in the 50 freestyle (24.62).
"I was very pleased with the effort," said Lindquist. "It's getting to be the time where we start gearing up for the conference meet (in four weeks), and so far, I think we are right on pace. We've had some very good swims the last couple of meets, everyone's working hard, and, hopefully, that hard work will pay off at the conference meet."
