ST. PAUL, Minn. — If someone would have told Saint Mary's University women's hockey coach
Terry Mannor heading into this weekend's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference series against Hamline that his Cardinals would manage to score just three goals — and earn three points — he probably would have told them they were crazy.
Yet, that's exactly what the Cardinals did, as SMU followed up Friday's 2-0 victory with a 1-1 tie Saturday.
"To pick up three out or four points is huge," said Mannor, whose team moved to 3-4-1 in the conference and 3-8-2 overall. "Offensively we didn't play all that great this weekend, but to hold Hamline to just one goal in two games, that's outstanding."
Brittany Lemke (St. Charles, Ill.), who stopped 26 shots in posting her second collegiate shutout on Firday, kicked out 30 of the 31 shots she faced on Saturday to keep the Cardinals in the game.
"Brittany played very well, and the defensmen in front of her did a great job, too," said Mannor, whose team was outshot 31-16, but got a seocnd-period goal from
Jill Rhody (St. Paul, Minn.) and held the Pipers to just a Kate Raasch second-period tally. "Hamline is a very good team — they've got some players who can really move, and we did a great job of shutting them down.
"I wouldn't say this was one of our most complete efforts, but we did what we had to do, and got three points out of the weekend — and at this stage in the season, that's all that matters."
