WINONA, Minn. — When the Saint Mary's University women's basketball team headed to the locker room at the half Wednesday evening, the scoreboard read: 35-21.

A 14-point halftime deficit — something the Cardinals had seen a lot of during their season-opening six-game slide.

This time around, however, the shoe was on the other foot, as the Cardinals were the ones enjoying the 14-point halftime cushion.

And while playing with a commanding lead wasn't something the Cardinals were all that familiar with thus far this season, they looked like seasoned veterans, as never let Coe closer than eight points in the second half en route to their first win of the season, a 72-62 decision at the SMU Gym.

The Cardinals, fueled by a second-straight double-double from Jess Weisbrod (Rollingstone, Minn.), took command midway through the opening 20 minutes, using a 16-0 run to transform a one-point, 11-10 deficit into a 26-11 cushion. SMU would add a 9-2 run to push that advantage to 35-16, before settling for its 14-point cushion at the half.

Coe, which had won its first eight games,, before falling to UW-Whitewater in its last game on Dec. 18, opened the second half with an 11-5 run to cut the gap to eight, 40-32, but that was as close as the Kohawks would get.

Weisbrod, who finished with a game-high 18 points to go along with her 14 rebounds — and now has double-doubles in three of the Cardinals' last four games — was one of four SMU players to finish in double figures. Kelly Tanke (La Crosse, Wis.) added 13  points, while Stephanie Ayers (Deer River, Minn.) and Cherie Kulig (Independence, Wis.) chipped in 12 and 11 points,, respectively.
