COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. — After scoring just 49 points, while giving up 100, in a 100-49 loss to St. Thomas on Wednesday, Saint Mary's University men's basketball coach Mike Trewick was in dire need of improvement — on both ends of the floor against Saint John's Saturday.
He got it.
Unfortunately, his Cardinals' improvement wasn't enough, as Saint John's outlasted SMU 75-61 in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game.
"We played much better tonight than we did (vs. St. Thomas) — in all aspects," said Trewick, whose team dropped its sixth straight — and remained winless (0-38) at SJU's Sexton Arena. "We just dug ourselves too deep a hole in the first half and couldn't get out of it."
The Cardinals, who fell behind by 10, 34-24, at the break, could not cut into the Johnnies' lead over the final 20 minutes, as SJU rode a 41-37 scoring edge to seal the win.
Will Wright (Chicago, Ill.) scored a game-high 25 points for the Cardinals (1-11 MIAC, 1-16 overall), while
Lukas Holland (La Crosse, Wis.) chipped in 14. Brady Brink scored 18 points for the Johnnies, leading five SJU players in double figures.
The Cardinals return home on Wednesday, taking on Macalester in a 7:30 p.m. game
