RIVER FALLS, Wis. — With the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships looming on the horizon, Saint Mary's University swimming and diving coach
Eric Lindquist was hoping to use his final two regular-season meets to get his teams lined up to make a serious charge at the conference competition.
After watching his teams' performances against UW-River Falls Saturday, its pretty safe to say his Cardinals are lined up pretty straight.
The Cardinal men, fueled by the efforts of senior
Brian Joyce (Chicago, Ill.), won 11 of the 12 events and rolled to a 126-80 dual-meet win over the Falcons, while the SMU women dropped a heartbreaking, 97-84 decision.
"It was a great day all the way around," said Lindquist. "The guys were awesome today — they were outnumbered (by UW-River Falls), but they were dominating. It was a tough loss for the women, one of those meets that you take the 'moral victory' of putting together a strong, strong showing, but coming up just short."
Joyce picked up a pair of individual first-place finishes — winning the 200 IM (2:13.75) and the 500 freestyle (5:14.54), while also swimming the lead leg in SMU's first-place finishing 400 freestyle relay (3:35.55). Jon Fox (Winona, Minn.) chipped in a pair of first-place efforts in the 50 freestyle (.22.98) and the 200 breaststroke (2:25.33), while
Danielle Braun (Cold Spring, Minn.) and
Courtney Keyler (Shorewood, Minn.) paced the Cardinal women, winning the 200 breaststroke (2:39.6( and 200 backstroke (2:27.39), respectively.
"We've got one last meet (next weekend at the Gustavus Invitational) before the conference championships, so it was nice to see us put together a solid performance today," said Lindquist. "I think we are setting ourselves up nicely for a great performance at the conference meet."
