ST. PAUL, Minn. — If Saint Mary's University women's hockey coach
Terry Mannor needed any type of sign as to what type of day it was going to be Saturday afternoon, he got it with the game's first shot.
Unfortunately for Mannor and the Cardinals, that shot was off the stick of St. Catherine's Michaela Michaelson— and it ended up in the back of the SMU net.
In fact, the Wildcats scored on two of their first six shots, and never looked back in handed SMU its second straight loss, 5-1 in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Drake Arena.
"I don't even know what to say — we got beat by two players this weekend," said Mannor, whose team dropped a 6-3 decision to the Wildcats on Friday — despite outshooting CSC by more than a two-to-one margin, 39-19. "Their goalie (Mel Gerten) was outstanding in both games, and (Michaelson) scored five of their 11 goals.
"We had more than our fair share of good scoring chances, we just couldn't get anything past (Gerten)."
The Cardinals, who had never been swept by the Wildcats — in fact, heading into the weekend, SMU boasted a 15-1-2 overall record vs. St. Catherine — never recovered from that 2-0 first-period hole, managing just a
Jenn Shire (Anaheim Hills, Calif.) second-period goal.
"It's disappointing, because it make our job that much tougher in terms of getting into the MIAC playoffs," said Mannor, whose team — which has been one of the five teams in the MIAC post-season tournament all seven years of its existence — falls to 3-6-1 in the MIAC and 3-10-2 overall. "I thought we played all right — offensively we created a lot of chances, we just couldn't bury the puck. But then, you can't be giving up five and six goals a game, either.
"This is one of those weekends you want to forget as quickly as possible."
