WINONA, Minn. — For the third straight game, the Saint Mary's University women's basketball team found itself in the midst of another nailbiter Wednesday evening against Macalester.

The Cardinals, three-point losers to conference-leading St. Thomas last Wednesday and two-point losers to second-place Saint Benedict on Saturday, had rallied from a four-point halftime deficit to tie the game at 42-42 with nine minutes remaining vs. the Scots.

Over those final nine minutes, however, Macalester seemed to do everything right, and the Cardinals seemed to do everything wrong, as the Scots outscored SMU 18-9 down the stretch en route to a 60-51 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory.

"I thought we played pretty well, we just weren't able to get the stops when we needed them," said SMU coach Mandy Pearson. "We seemed to be a little out of sync at times, but overall I was happy with the way we played — except for the final score."

SMU, which dropped its sixth straight — equalling its season-high six game slide to open the season — got on the board first on a layup by Jess Weisbrod (Rollingstone, Minn.), but that would be the last time the Cardinals would hold the lead.

Macalester opened leads as big as five in the game's opening 20 minutes, settling for a four-point, 29-25 advantage at the break. The Scots picked up where they left off to start the second half, outscoring SMU 9-4 to take its biggest lead of the game, 38-29 with 14:48 remaining.

A 13-4 Cardinal run tied the game 42-42, but that's where the Cardinal comeback stalled, as Macalester rattled off 10 straight points — thanks in part to two SMU missed field goals, a pair of turnovers and back-to-back misses from the free throw line — to ice the win.

Wesibrod finished with a team-high 13 points for the Cardinals (2-12 MIAC, 3-14 overall), while Jess Miller (Carver, Minn.) chipped in 10 points and a team-leading six rebounds. Danielle Johnson scored a game-high 15 points to lead four double-figure scorers for Macalester (6-8 MIAC, 7-10 overall).
