LAKE FOREST, Ill. — With a roster that included six freshmen from the Chicago area, the weekend's two-game, nonconference series at Lake Forest was a homecoming of sorts for the Saint Mary's University women's hockey team.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, "home" wasn't so sweet, as Lake Forest held the Cardinals to two goals for the second straight night en route to a 4-2 nonconference victory Saturday.
"We certainly had a lot of fans in the stands — in a way, it kind of felt a bit like a home series," said SMU coach
Terry Mannor, whose Cardinals had battled the Foresters to a 2-2 stalemate in Friday's opening game of the two-game series. "And I think our players fed off that a bit. Both games were very competitive games — we played a very high energy level both nights.
"We just weren't able to shut (Lake Forest) down when we needed to."
The Foresters got on the board first, as Kerry Gotowka scored her team-leading fifth goal on the powerplay six minutes into the opening period. The Cardinals were tie things at 1-1 seven minutes late when
Katie Cachey (Orland Park, Ill.) — one of those six Chicago-area freshmen — tallied her team-best fourth goal of the year.
That however, would be as close as SMU would get, as the Foresters netted their second goal with less than two minutes remaining in the first period, then added another midway through the second to take a 3-1 advantage into the game's final 20 minutes.
Caiti Knudson (Plymouth, Minn.) cut the gap to one, 3-2, with her first collegiate goal at 8:44 of the third period, but the Foresters would added their second powerplay goal of the afternoon three minutes later to ice the win.
"I was impressed with the way Lake Forest played, and I thought, for the most part, we matched their intensity" said Mannor, whose team fell to 2-7-1 overall. "We made a couple of mistakes at crucial points in the game, and (Lake Forest) made us pay for them — that was the difference."
