Game Summary vs. Carleton /
GameDay Online
NORTHFIELD, Minn. — It was a tale of two halves for the Saint Mary's University women's soccer team Wednesday afternoon against Carleton.
There was the good half, and there was the bad half.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, the good half wasn't nearly as good as the bad half was bad, as Carleton took advantage of SMU's lackluster first-half effort, scoring two goals 15 minutes apart en route to a 2-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory.
"I don't what happened in that first half, we just did not come out ready to play," said SMU coach Eric Zimmerman. "We played much, much better in the second half and actually had Carleton on their heels a bit.
"Problem was, by the time we finally decided to play the way we are capable, we were staring at a 2-0 hole and just couldn't dig ourselves out."
The Knights pelted SMU goalkeeper
Mariana Sanchez (Puebla, Mexico) with eight-first half shots — getting goals from Lily VanderStaay and Nicole Tomita — while SMU managed just one shot on Carleton goalie Kate Trenerry.
SMU cut Carleton's offensive opportunities in half in the second half, while doubling their own, as the Knights held just a 3-2 advantage in shots on goal over the game's second half.
"It's not much fun to lose a game like that," said Zimmerman, whose team falls to 0-5-0 in the MIAC and 4-6-1 overall — and heads to Augsburg for a 5 p.m. contest against the Auggies on Saturday. "But, hopefully, we can take some of the momentum we gained from the second half and carry it over to (Saturday against) Augsburg."
