WINONA, Minn. — In a season filled with ups and downs — unfortunately for the Cardinals more downs than ups — the Saint Mary's University women's soccer team had one thought in mind when they took the field for Saturday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference home finale against Saint Benedict: Give the SMU seniors the send-off they deserved.
Saint Benedict, however, had other ideas, as the Blazers broke open a one-goal game with three second-half tallies in handed SMU its season-high fifth straight loss.
"It certainly wasn't the type of outcome we were hoping for," said SMU coach Eric Zimmerman, whose team continued to struggle on the offensive end of the field, failing to score for the fifth straight game. "Everyone was determined to make this a memorable
Senior Day for our graduating seniors, and for the most part, we did that through the first 45 minutes."
Over the final 45 minutes, however, the Blazers made life miserable for the Cardinals, getting a goal from Allison Tourville in the game's 60th minute, then netting back-to-back goals off the foot of Tina Lisk three minutes apart 11 minutes later to ice the win.
"It seemed like every time we had a defensive breakdown, (Saint Benedcit) made us pay for it," said Zimmerman, whose team had a chance to take an early 1-0 advantage, but
Bethany Kaufmann (
Green Bay, Wis.) had her penalty kick try in the game's 30th minute sailed just high and wide. "I was pretty pleased with the way we played in the first half, but we didn't seem to have the same energy (in the second half). We got out of sync a bit and Saint Benedict took advantage of that."
The Cardinals, who fall to 0-10-0 in the MIAC and 4-10-1 overall, step out of conference play for its next two games, traveling to Beloit, Wis., for a 2 p.m. game against Beloit College on Sunday, then traveling to Menomonie, Wis., for a 7 p.m. game against UW-Stout on Thursday.
