MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University women's soccer team entered Saturday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game against Augsburg having scored just five goals in their last eight games.

Augsburg, meanwhile, entered Saturday's conference tilt having posted six shut outs and had allowed just six goals in its first 10 games — three of which came in a 3-0 loss to third-ranked UW-Eau Claire on Sept. 6.

The numbers spoke for themselves.

Before — and after — the game.

When the final horn sounded Saturday evening, the numbers hadn't lied — which was good news for Augsburg and bad news for SMU — as the Auggies picked up shutout win No. seven, holding the Cardinals without a goal for the second straight game and fifth time this season, en route to a 1-0 MIAC victory.

"The final score is disappointing, but we played with a lot of heart and passion tonight," said SMU coch Eric Zimmerman. "Augsburg is a tough, defensive team and when your offense is struggling the way ours is, that's not a good combination."

After a scoreless first half, in which Augsburg held a 5-1 advantage in shots on goal, the Auggies finally broke the deadlock less than two minutes into the second half, as Katie Medd took a feed from Whtiney Holman and beat Cardinal goalkeeper Mariana Sanchez (Puebla, Mexico).

With the one-goal lead, the Auggies clamped down defensively, holding SMU to just one shot on goal over the game's final 45 minutes. Tania Trowbridge (Shakopee, Minn.) and Keirra Metcalfe (Pickering, Ontario) accounted for the Cardinals' only shot on goal, while Sanchez finished with seven saves.

"We didn't get the result we were hoping for tonight, but I was happy with the way we played," said Zimmerman. "I saw a lot of good things out there, we just weren't able to put it all together."

The Cardinals, who dropped to 0-7-0 in the MIAC and 4-7-1 overall, return to action Tuesday, traveling to St. Thomas to take on unbeaten and league-leading St. Thomas in a 4 p.m. contest.
