WINONA, Minn. — With a first-half save against St. Norbert Sunday, Saint Mary's University goalkeeper
Jon Szafranski (Barrington, Ill.) became the Cardinals' all-time career saves leader.
In fact, by the time Sunday's nonconference game against the Green Knights ended, Szafranski had pushed the career saves record to 260 — five more than Matt Muellner had posted from 1995-97.
Wednesday evening against Carleton — the nation's eighth-ranked team — Szafranski was at it again, stopping 13 of the Knights' shots.
Unfortunately, not even the junior netminder's best impression of a brick wall was enough, as Carleton pelted the SMU net with 18 shots — including 11 in the first half — en route to a 5-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory at Winona State's Maxwell Field at Alltel Stadium.
The Knights — off to their best start since 1977 and unbeaten in their first 12 games (11-0-1) — got on the board in the game's 26th minute as Jack Boller corralled a loose ball in front of the SMU net and beat Szafranski for his second goal of the season.
Carleton made it 2-0 eight minutes later on a goal by Paul Pedke at 34:40, as the Knights — bolstered by their 11-1 advantage in shots on goal — took a 2-0 cushion into the halftime break.
Well-rested, Carleton wasted no time pushing their lead to 3-0, as Bobby Phillips tallied his third of the season less than two minutes ito the second half. Tim Willis added his team-leading eighth of the season with 15 minutes remaining and Sam Birnbaum tallied the first of his career late in the half to round out the scoring.
The Cardinals, who dropped to 0-5-1 in the MIAC and 2-10-1 overall, return to action Friday, traveling to St. Paul, Minn., to take on Macalester in a 7:45 p.m. contest.
