The Cardinals kicked off their season on Friday, but the Halloween season opener was anything but a treat, as St. Scholastica scored four goals in both the second and third periods en route to a 9-1 nonconference victory at the SMU Ice Arena.. … UW-Superior, meanwhile, suffered its first loss of the season, dropping a 3-1 nonconference decision to St. Thomas Friday evening.

Last Meeting: Mike Glaesmer (Traverse City, Mich.) scored two goals — the first two of his collegiate career — as SMU rallied from a 3-1 deficit with four unanswered goals, only to give up the game-tying tally with less than two minutes remaining in regulation in a 4-4 season-opening tie vs. the Yellowjackets a year ago.

Cardinal Notes: Steve Murphy (Anchorage, Alaska) accounted for SMU's lone goal vs. the Saint Friday. It was Murphy's first collegiate goal. … Greg Moore (Woodbury, Minn.) stopped a career-high 42 shots in the loss vs. St. Scholastica. Moore was making his first collegiate start vs. the Saints. … Five of CSS's nine goals game via special teams — three powerplay goals and two shorthanded tallies. … SMU's loss to St. Scholastica extended its winless streak in season openers to six (0-4-2), dating back to a 9-3 win over Finlandia to open the 2002-03 season. … After going 7-5-2 in their first 14 games, the Cardinals won just two of their last eight games in finishing 9-13-2. … The Cardinals allowed five goals or more in four of their last six games, including their season-ending 5-4 loss at Augsburg. … SMU allowed five or more goals nine times last season. … On the flip side, the Cardinals were held to two goals or less in nine of their 14 losses this season. … Anthony Bohn (Spring Hill, Fla.) recorded five assists in SMU's final two-game series of the season, giving the Cardinal sophomore a team-best 26 assists — and marking the second time in two years that Bohn has held the team's assist lead. … Bohn — who led the MIAC in assists (21 in 16 games) and was second in points (25) — also finished as the team's point leader  (31). His 31 points marked the first time an SMU player cracked the 30-point barrier since current assistant coach Lenny Hofmann posted 33 points during the 2003-04 season. … An honorable-mention All-MIAC pick and a member of the MIAC's All-First Year team as a freshman, Bohn was SMU's respresentative on the All-MIAC First Team last season. … Freshman Mike Glaesmer (Traverse City, Mich.) finished as the team's goal leader (15) and was second, along with sophomore Morgan Shepherd (Brainerd, Minn.), in points with 26. … Glaesmer's 10 goals in 16 conference games were tops among MIAC freshmen. … Glaesmer — named to the MIAC and USCHO.com All-Rookie teams last season — and Shepherd were two of three SMU players with 10 or more goals, while Bohn and Shepherd were two of five with at least 10 assists. … The trio was also three of 12 SMU players with 10 or more points. … Dan Smith appeared in all 25 games for the Cardinals during his senior season last year, compiling a 3.01 goals-against-average and an  .890 save percentage. … Thirty-three of SMU's 91 goals came on the powerplay . … The Cardinals won just once in 13 tries when their opponent scored first (1-10-2).

Yellowjacket Notes: UW-Superior's offense entered the weekend in high gear, having routed both Northland (11-0) and Finlandia (9-1). … Kevin Huck leads the team with seven points — including assists on six of the team's 20 goals. … Talon Berlando, meanwhile, has scored six goals — including four in Tuesday's victory over Finlandia. … UW-Superior has gotten goals from 11 different players. … Chad Beiswenger was in goal for both of the team's season-opening wins, stopping 14 shots in the season-opening win over Northland, then following that up with a 12-save effort against Finlandia. Ten of UW-Superior's first 20 goals have come in the second period.
