Gustavus scored three goals in the first period and never looked back in handing the Cardinals a 6-0 setback in the teams' Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener Friday evening at the SMU Ice Arena.

A Year Ago: The Cardinals and Gusties split their Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference series a year ago, with both teams winning on their home ice. GAC scored four goals in the second period en route to a 6-0 victory in the first game, while SMU got goals from five different players and four assists from Anthony Bohn (Spring Hill, Fla.) en route to a 5-2 victory in the rematch.

Gustavus comes into tonight's game ranked No. 14 in the latest USCHO.com Poll. … With Friday's loss to Gustavus, the Cardinals' season-opening losing streak climbed to five straight. It marks the second straight season in which SMU opened winless in its first five games — the Cardinals went 0-4-1 to kick off last year's schedule. … Friday's loss was the second time this season SMU has failed to score at least one goal, having also been shut out by UW-Stevens Point 3-0 on Nov. 7. … The Cardinals' 3-0 loss to UW-Stevens Point on Nov. 7 extended SMU's winless streak vs. the Pointers to 15 straight (0-13-2). Ross Ring-Jan, Justin Lee and Rory Dynan accounted for GAC's other three goals vs. the Cardinals. … Along with his team-leading nine goals, Martinson also leads the team in points with 11.
